ilab Winter Germinate Winners Announced!

Following another fantastic ilab bootcamp, the final list of startup companies has been chosen from over 100 applications across Queensland and interstate to participate in ilab’s Winter 2014 Germinate program. The teams selected were ….

  • Mindstar – harnessing technology and know-how to tackle mental health challenges
  • Academic Karma – breaking down the academic publishing barriers
  • Sproute – hosting and customising instant web apps
  • Vizbly – advertising meets ibeacon
  • WhyNotTours – simplifying celebration tours
  • BetterMe  – using social fitness to drive health

With the inclusion of WhyNotTours,  ilab’s Germinate program will be spreading its wings to Cairns for the first time where they will be joined by another Cairns’ team iAMconnected from theSPACE. It will be fantastic to include the tropical influence in the program and to fine tune the Germinate processes to better support entrepreneurs across Queensland in future programs.

All teams came with some great ideas and contributed with wonderful energy.  ilab is really appreciative of the creativity and effort from all participants.  Special mention also to CrowdSourceHire who came up from Melbourne for the weekend.

The prize for the successful teams is to participate in ilab’s 3-month intense accelerator program that provides individual training, mentoring and support from successful entrepreneurs, coupled with up to $20,000 to start a scalable, digital-based business, develop their customers and build a first product.

A well organised, very informative few days that has helped move our project so much further than if we had not attended. Even though I have been running a business for 14 years I learnt so much from the Guest Presentations. I highly recommend Bootcamp if you wish to be inspired and get your project moving forward!”  Claire Brazil

Fifty people from twenty-four teams were selected for ilab’s Germinate bootcamp for three days across 2nd to 4th May.  Pitching played a big part in the weekend, and teams use a variety of workshops to help hone why they have a great business, not just a great idea or great tech …  Bootcamp is full on with sessions covered topics such as lean execution, finding and working with a CTO in a startup, innovation, project planning, the business model canvas, pitch preparation, sales, legal & IP, marketing and the press, as well as pitching every afternoon.   An impressive variety of ideas were presented, covering wearables, SAAS, social, mobile apps, APIs and more.

A popular session was the Q+A panel of past Germinate businesses and ilab mentors and which featured Hugh Geiger from Ollo Mobile Skyping in and telling it straight from Kansas City.

It was extremely useful and an excellent opportunity to network and grow ideas” Seini Puamau

Special thanks to all the presenters, mentors and judges who gave up their valuable weekend time to contribute.  Queensland’s startup eco-system would be nowhere without your support!
