The Next Top Startup? ilab at UQ shortlists 25 teams for Germinate 10!

We’re gearing up for another action-packed Weekend Bootcamp! There’ll be pitch fighting, founder fall-outs, teams that won’t make it to the finish line, and plot-twisting judgement calls. Someone bring us the popcorn!

So far, 25 teams have been shortlisted for Germinate 10 and this weekend they’ll be battling it out for 1 of 10 spots in the final Germinate 10 Cohort. The 25 shortlisted teams will workshop their business ideas; pitch them to ilab’s expert judging panels; learn some startup fundamentals; and, by the end of the weekend will hopefully leave inspired and more motivated than ever to take their startups to the next level.

Alborz Fallah, Founder of caradvice.com.au will kick off the Bootcamp on Friday afternoon with a fireside chat on how he turned his $35 blog into a $35million business. The 25 shortlisted teams will also participate in sessions on what it means to be a startup; an intro to the dreaded elevator pitch; and some practise pitch sessions. Business modelling; growth hacking and all things legal and IP will be the talk of the town on Saturday, with teams also squeezing in more pitch practise throughout the day. Bootcamp sessions on Sunday will focus on agreements, incentives and partnership structures for founders, as well as life after Germinate with ilab startups from past cohorts coming in to meet and speak with the shortlisted teams. The weekend will culminate in a final pitching and judging session where a judging panel of seasoned entrepreneurs and industry experts will make their final recommendations on who the lucky 10 teams will be to enter the Germinate 10 Cohort.

This cohort of 25 shortlisted teams represent a huge variety of industries from fashion and media to healthtech, education, real-estate, and retail. There’s a mix of software and hardware, with teams focusing on everything from improving student life, to improving the state of the world.

If we can promise you one thing, it’s that we’ve got a busy weekend coming up!

If you’d like to join us for our fireside chat with Alborz Fallah on Friday, we’ll be livestreaming the event on Facebook, so keep an eye out for that! We’re keen to pick his brain on his journey; advice to other young founders out there; and find out more about what’s next for him.

We also still have a few spots left looking for volunteers to help us run the bootcamp event so if you’re free, we need your help! It’s a great way to get a taste of the #startuplife, without jumping head first into the madness. You will get an understanding of what happens #behindthescenes to execute a bootcamp event; meet our next intake of budding entrepreneurs; find out what happens in an accelerator program; and, meet industry experts, seasoned founders and investors in the startup space! Can’t make it for the whole weekend? No worries! We’re looking to fill up various time slots so, if you can’t commit to the whole weekend, that’s no problem!

Interested? Reach out to our Community Manager, Bec at bec.mcintosh@ilab.com.au and let her know! And, bring your friends! #squadgoals

See you this weekend!
