International sportstech startups come to Brisbane and more – read the ilab UQ news

ilab UQ Hosts International Sportstech Startups

94 applications, teams coming from all over Australia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand and, ultimately, 12 startups selected!

It was a busy Christmas shortlisting and organising the first bootcamp in the world for the UQ HYPE global sportstech accelerator. Welcoming 26 teams for 3 days of workshops, pitching, competition and networking with the aim to select the “crème de la crème” of sports startups in the region. The judging panel was full of talent as well and included Greg Swan, CEO Brisbane Lions, Nikki Dryden, PwC and dual Canadian Olympian, sports tech CEOs Laurie Malone, Vald Performance and Markus Deutsch, Fusion Sports.
Following bootcamp, UQ’s Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj and Queensland’s acting Chief Scientist, Dr Christine Williams, announced the 12 startups selected for the very first edition of the UQ HYPE sportstech accelerator. Those selected will benefit from fast track access to global sports tech mentors and markets, as well as a unique chance to pitch for $25,000 at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in April, on the Gold Coast.

Neeraj Aggarwala, CEO of startup SportIDO flew in from New Delhi to for bootcamp. SportIDO’s inspiring mission is to make sport accessible to all Indians.
Oscar Wong, founder Eggplant Technologies from Hong Kong, demonstrating his intelligent in-home Gym – Move it to ilab Germinate 11 founder Josh Tambunan.
UQ at the NBA All Stars!
UQ’s Associate Professor Sarah Kelly will be joining executives from Spalding and Silicon Valley Bank as a guest judge for HYPE’s upcoming global sportstech competition in Los Angeles coinciding with the 2018 NBA All Stars game on Feb 15.

UQ Startup Interns In Action!

As a UQ student, one way to really learn about what startups are all about is to seek out internship opportunities with qualified startups.  Listen to Djina Teurquetil as she explains her fascinating journey from internee to employee following her participation in ilab UQ’s Winter Internship program and subsequent placement with the awesome Scrunch.  Djina is a Dual Bachelor Degree in Business Management and Commerce at UQ, Majoring in Information Systems and International Business whose role at Scrunch is Influencer Campaign Manager.

UQ’s Startup Laneway is for you.

Startups needs great graduates too so UQ is providing a unique opportunity for young startups to access UQ’s brightest upcoming graduates at the UQ Careers Fair which attracts over 4,000 students. We are creating a unique Startup Laneway where as a startup, you can showcase your product and culture, and position your business in front of students looking for opportunity and join us in promoting entrepreneurship and startups as a career path!

UQ’s annual Careers Fair is the largest event of its kind in Queensland and will be held from 10:00am – 2:00pm on 21st March 2018. If you are a student, then don’t forget to check out this year’s Startup Laneway

UQ Business School and the Australian Institute for Business & Economics (AIBE) are bringing together an expert panel, moderated by ilab UQ’s Director, Bernie Woodcroft, to explore the issues surrounding valuing early-stage startups:

Vibelabs are launching their new product, UQU Vibe, in collaboration with UQ Union, during Orientation Week (12th to 16th of February). Stay tuned and come meet them if you are around
Micromelon Robotics are organising an early access workshop on the 10th February at the UQ St Lucia Campus! Tickets are $30 and they are looking for any 8-15 year olds who are interested in robots or learning to code to come along. Do not miss out, they make learning fun!  Book HERE.
Brisbane Tool Library has found a venue located in West End, and have also launched their crowdfunding campaign.

UQ Idea Hub Summer Session 2018

Are you a UQ student interested in entrepreneurship and innovation?  Applications are now open for the UQ Idea Hub Summer Session 2018!
You will attend six exclusive workshops focused on innovation, design and business skills and be mentored by experienced local and global innovators to equip you with the skills and knowledge to get you on your startup journey.
Summer Session begins Wednesday 28 February and runs every Wednesday for six weeks from 5-7.30pm.
